The apse was to be muuuuuch deeper than what you see now

But due to some design error they ended up with just one metre available.

And do you know what the architect did?

Did he break into the neighbour's living room?

No, an engineer would have done that!

Instead, the architect was clever, and painted and decorated the walls of the apse in such a way that the eye was misled by the perspective.

And so at first glance the effect is that of the original design.
